Microserve took part in an open tender process and were awarded the contract to build five websites for Bath and North East Somerset Council to promote their world-famous heritage attractions, most notably The Roman Baths.
The brief was to build five websites in total, but the features and functionality were similar across all five sites. With limited time and budget, we proposed a smart solution that would deliver great value and make the sites easy to maintain in the longer term.
Our proposal used the Drupal multi-site approach. Multi-site allows us to share a single Drupal installation (including core code, contributed modules, and themes) among several sites. This is particularly useful for managing the code, since each upgrade only needs to be applied once and is deployed across all sites. Each site has its own database and configuration settings, so each site will have its own content, settings, modules and theme. This means each site can be quite different in terms of look and feel and functionality, yet ongoing maintenance is massively simplified.
We very much appreciate Microserve's professionalism and expertise, and our team have found them a pleasure to work with!
The sites are fully responsive for mobile and tablet devices and offer the Bath team full control over all content. We have an ongoing maintenance contract and have since been awarded smaller projects to add new sites to the multi-site suite, such as the Georgian Newspaper Project and Bath Burial Index Integrations. Using the multi-site approach these sites were delivered incredibly quickly and cost-effectively.
